Lecture 11

ARC (African Risk Capacity)

A specialised agency of the African Union providing parametric insurance to African member states.

How it works in practice

Senegal pays an annual premium into the ARC pool. When satellite rainfall data confirms a severe drought, ARC disburses funds to Senegal within two to four weeks of the trigger being met. The government uses the payout to distribute food aid before the humanitarian situation worsens, avoiding the months-long delays typical of traditional disaster relief funding.
