Cedant

The insurance or reinsurance company that sponsors a cat bond or ILS transaction to transfer risk.

How it works in practice

A regional property insurer in Texas has significant hurricane exposure. To protect its balance sheet, it cedes a portion of this risk through a cat bond programme. In this transaction, the Texas insurer is the cedant: the party transferring risk. The SPV issues notes to investors, and if a qualifying hurricane occurs, the collateral flows from investors to the cedant.
