Calculation Agent

The independent party responsible for determining whether a trigger event has occurred and calculating loss amounts.

How it works in practice

After a major hurricane, the calculation agent for a cat bond reviews PCS industry loss reports, applies the formula set out in the offering circular, and determines that the trigger threshold has been exceeded. The agent then notifies the trustee that 60% of the collateral should be released to the sponsor. Neither the sponsor nor the investors make this determination themselves.
