Lecture 12

Green Cat Bond

A cat bond where proceeds or risk transfer are aligned with environmental sustainability objectives.

How it works in practice

A Central American government issues a green cat bond to transfer hurricane risk. The offering circular specifies that the cost savings from the risk transfer, compared to traditional reinsurance, will fund the construction of mangrove restoration projects along the coastline. The mangroves provide a natural barrier against storm surge, reducing future losses and the cost of subsequent risk transfer.
