Lecture 11

CCRIF (Caribbean Catastrophe Risk Insurance Facility)

A regional risk pool providing parametric insurance coverage to Caribbean and Central American governments.

How it works in practice

After a Category 4 hurricane crosses Jamaica, CCRIF's parametric model calculates wind speeds and storm surge at grid points across the island. Because the readings exceed Jamaica's pre-agreed trigger level, CCRIF makes a payout of $17 million within 14 days of the event. The Jamaican government uses the funds for emergency relief and temporary housing.
