Lecture 8

Secondary Market

The market where previously issued cat bonds are traded between investors, providing liquidity and price discovery.

How it works in practice

An ILS fund needs to reduce its US hurricane exposure before the start of hurricane season. It contacts a broker-dealer and offers to sell $10 million face value of a Florida wind cat bond. The dealer finds a buyer willing to pay 97 cents on the dollar. The trade settles through Euroclear, and the buyer now holds the position and receives future coupon payments.
