Seasonality

The cyclical variation in cat bond spreads linked to hurricane season (Jun-Nov), with spreads typically widening before peak season.

How it works in practice

Cat bond spreads for US hurricane risk tend to widen as the Atlantic hurricane season approaches in June and tighten after the season ends in November without a major loss. An ILS fund manager planning to sell a Florida wind position will typically get a better price in December, after hurricane season, than in August, when the risk of a near-term event is highest.
